Lets set the scene... I wake up and its an hour before I have to pull my arse out of the house to get to Stockport for my second SC of the season. I make the decision that I don't want to play the usual 4 character deck, so I scramble together this list of cards as a last minute jobby. Now you can lead a man to a non-stormtrooper deck, but you can't make it play that deck???... So naturally, this deck contains Stormtroopers.

I wanted to avoid the trends in the meta, so I immediately disregarded the usual pairing of Unkar & FOST and settled on a non-elite FN so I could include double DT. Limiting my card-pool to just reds and neuts, I put in every red weapon I owned without giving it too much thought (BTW I don't own Rocket Launcher). This was followed by cramming in all the relevant support and event tech I needed with the remaining card slots. What I ended up with was this monster.

Element Games SC, Stockport. 20 player turnout, 4 rounds of swiss and a cut to top 4 of single elimination.

Round 1 vs Vader/Raider - WIN

Round 2 vs Palpatine - WIN (this player goes on to win the SC)

Round 3 vs triple DT - WIN

Round 4 vs Palpatine - WIN

As the only undefeated player I top the swiss and make the top 4. Somewhat amusingly the top 4 consisted of 3 Palpatine's and myself!

Semi finals vs Palpatine - LOSS

In addition I also got to play a casual game before and after the event vs Palpatine and Poe/Ray, which won both games.

So what sets this build apart?

  • A starting hit-point total of 31. Yes you heard that right.
  • We can justify playing Endless Ranks as we have more than one non-unique red characters.
  • This is not just Endless Ranks. This is an M&S, 10 hit-point Endless Ranks, thanks to our friends at Death Trooper HQ. That's potentially 20 more hit-points an opponent has to grind through.
  • We have 2 starting dice with natural faces, so Imperial Inspection can still be played with reasonable reliability.
  • Ample amounts of meat to sponge for FN via The Best Defense....
  • Death Troopers provide consistent range damage. Combine this with FN's weapon carousel to begin putting out the big numbers from the get go.
  • Its got guns. Everybody likes guns. Even janky rubbish like DT-29's.
  • Did I mention it has 31 health?

So the ultimate question remains - Is this better than Funkar? I guess that depends on how much you rate Unkar's ability to choke over the sheer resilience of big Endless Ranks plays and the extra damage output. I know which one I'd choose.

So I look at this and go "is this competitive? Maybe". Then I go, "does it look like a lot of fun? Damn straight it does!". I've ranked hard at the last couple of champs with ambiguous combos. Maybe aggro doesn't suit my play style. Maybe I should give this a whirl this weekend just for the fun of it!

What did you find were your main reasons for losing in the final games? What worked for you and what changes would you make?

@ordinaryjedi I'm glad you like it! Rolling dice more is pretty fun and Nines doesn't disappoint.

The deck certainly stood up to the big boys on the day. Sure there are some suspicious entrants to the list but as long as you can resolve the less efficient weapon dice like DT-29 for 2 damage each round then does it even matter?

The deck I lost too was an exact copy of the Palp I already defeated once in swiss. They were a father son team that ran the same deck card for card. So there was a father son final which was pretty amusing to behold! But the point is, the deck stood toe to toe in those matches and it felt like only the natural variance of the game is what determined the winner.

If your going to play this list it's important to understand that it doesn't play like an action cheating aggro deck. I like to take things really slow and resolve everything I can get before rolling more dice into the pool. This somewhat guards you against devastating removal plays. Often I will leave a single range damage in play after resolving them just in case my next die rolls a modifier. min/max wherever possible, no matter how many actions or re-rolls it takes.

The only immediate change I would make is for Rocket Launcher. I'd probably drop a Training for one.

No Vibroknife?

I understand needing to maximize matched damage sides, but that's one of FN-2199 - Loyal Troopers staples

I don't think Vibroknife is essential, not many players run shields now plus with Imperial Inspection running rampant, you'd rather try and ramp into 3 cost and not even bother with the 2 costs. In my FN deck, I have Holdout Blaster and F-11D Rifle as my only 2 costs and even then i don't play them half the time. However there is an arguement for it.

BeNNyBiLL 581

The real problem with Vibroknife is that its damage sides are lower than every other 2 cost weapon out there, and ambush doesn't serve much purpose when this list is inherently action heavy. Plus when Nines falls, which he certainly will, the decent +2 side becomes impossible to resolve without a Z6 Riot Control Baton in play. And remember, you might not even be rolling in Nines the round you play it, because overwriting for a better weapon before you roll is almost always what you want to do. For the list specifically, even the DT-29 Heavy Blaster Pistol is a better card than Vibroknife.
