Shout out to the Destiny Council guys. Check out the inspiration for the deck here: http://swdestinydb.com/decklist/view/20168/17thplacesadness-1.0

Disclaimer: I didn't do much testing with this deck ahead of time against the current meta. Only reason I showed up to this Regional was I was told, "There is going to be like max 30 people there"... didn't quite work out that way. But at least there wasn't 64 people there.

I’m sure you are all familiar with the deck, but just want to comment on a few card choices.

Armor Plating over Force Illusion. I hate losing cards that could win me the game. I would rather take 2 damage and block 2 than mill 4. Also, I'm cheap. I own 2 force illusion, wasn't going to buy 2 more. I let my brother play them.

Dark Counsel is really good. If you roll like crap most the time like I do, here’s what you do. Talzin yourself, turn Dark Counsel to the special so you can get another reroll and hopefully end up on another special or focus.

Energy Bow who doesn’t want 4 dh-17’s in their deck. I liked it when I played it, the disrupt came in handy a few times actually. I never got a chance to use the ability to reroll, might could have gone with another overconfidence.

Vandalize wanted at least to hit chance cube, force speed, suppressive fire, force illusion, etc. Never played it. I should have but didn’t. Got greedy in the top when I could have hit chance cube but then got probed.

Here’s the round breakdown:

Round 1 - SC Championship Card - Bye (1-0)

Round 2 - eGrevious / Royal Guard - W (2-0)

This was scarier than I thought, but can’t remember if he hit tactical mastery on the last turn if that would have won him the game or just killed a second character leaving me with Trooper. Before I backup muscled on my first action of that round.

Round 3 - eThrawn / eSnoke - L (2-1)

First match against Thrawn Snoke ever. I felt like making them pick between 5 cards every round might not be so bad for me. Didn’t get a good feel for it in this game, but it was close. Gave me hope. The second to last turn was full of poor decisions all the way around.

Round 4 - eThrawn / eSnoke - L (2-2)

This sucked. All hope of beating this deck fades quickly. I probed early, saw he had a vader’s fist and got rid a removal card I think. He rolls thrawn hits 2 resources and strips my removal. I roll out bala I think I show like 6 damage and my opponent say something like “man that’s a lot of damage” to which I reply, “says the man holding a vader’s fist“. I talzin myself at some point and hit friends in low. Lame. He plays vader’s fist. I lose. He was a cool guy though.

Round 5 - eLuke / eRey - W (3-2)

I think he tried to play a little to clever after I chose his battlefield and put 2 shields on bala. He wanted to unblock able to bala without wasting damage so he put the first 2 damage into Talzin. Then did unblock able the next round to bala for 7, not sure if the first 2 damage to talzin ended up making a difference, but Bala got a nice reset after killing rey. Then first action next round tactical mastery into activate a loaded Bala into free-for-all for the win.

Round 6 - eJyn / eCassian - W (4-2)

Don’t recall much of this one. I know I went after Jyn first and went through 2 second chances. He killed one of my characters. We played on my battlefield, had we played on his which was Occupied City he may have milled me.

Round 7 - eIden / eBeckett - W (5-2)

I went for Beckett first, he went for Talzin. Got another nice Bala reset off. I think I free for all for the win here too.

Top Cut - 8th Seed

Consider myself lucky on SoS to get in consider the Thrawn Snoke player I lost to in round 3 didn’t get in and finished 5-2 as well.

Vs #1 seed overall, pretty sure this is the deck: http://swdestinydb.com/decklist/view/25356/ohioregional3rdplace6-11swissseed-1.0

eThrawn / eSnoke - L (1-2)

I won round 1, hot damn. He forgot to roll in his chance cube on round 2 and I missed it as well. We came to the conclusion that he should roll it in after we confirmed he had paid for. He had resolved his focus already so didn’t get to the 3 resource side. This probably ended up costing him the match.

Round 2 - I recall he used 2 force illusion and they got rid of both his vader fist’s I believe. So I thought I was in good shape. But then I lost, don’t recall how. I think it was AT-ST that got out in this one and messed me up. I’m also pretty sure this was the game where on Talzin round 1 I hit probe, then round 2 I hit friends in low.

Round 3 - Not terribly close, last round pulled my free-for-all with thrawn which I think could have won me the game at that point with only snoke on 9 health left. I ate 3 or 4 hover tank specials in this game though to kill me off.

Yes, that was the correct decklist (me) that you played in top 8. In our game 1, I've never seen a judge "ruling" that basically told the player "you decide how to handle it". Part of why I rolled it in was bc I didn't have any focus anymore and I did pay and announce I was rolling it in, just forgot. But in retrospect next time I'd probably just leave it and go from there. Not being able to focus to it probably did cost me that first game.

In Game 2, the turning point was you had 5 dice in the pool, one of which was a On the Hunt special and I had 3 shields on Thrawn. When I Mind Tricked, I was definitely taking that die unless you stuck it by itself and put the other 4, though maybe even then because you only had I think 1 card left to reroll, but you put the On the Hunt die with 2 others, so it was a no brainer to take. Then your reroll on the 2 remaining didn't show any guns, or maybe just a modified side. Then I dropped a Hover tank, hit the special and I think some tie damage. Next round I think Hover tank special again plus ATST or Planetary was game. You did hit even with Talzin twice that game.

Game 3 was IMO closer than you think, you got a bunch of early damage (you also talzin'd an even once that game too). I was behind on damage and when I looked there was only 2 mins left before time. You were out of cards/actions and I dropped Hover tank 1 and hit the special for 6 damage. Next round after time was called, even though you reactivated Bala with a billion upgrades after killing Thrawn, I dropped the 2nd Hover tank and hit the special on both for 12 more damage along with 1 or maybe both Snoke dice on indirect and that took it.

@Dante2377 thanks for the much more in-depth and accurate commentary on that round. Also a good point I didn't mention before, On the Hunt special can be scary. It was definitely the most fun best of 3 I've played in :) Look forward to reading your writeup on hyperloops.

No price of failure? It seems good

@Bminny I’m sure you could play it. I think mathematically the difference between 4 and 5 evens is slim here. Or you could drop a friends in low. For me personally I never played it because I almost always aggressively kill my trooper with Best Defense and Guardian to make sure Bala doesn’t die. And I really don’t want to price Talzin. It could definitely win you some games though.
