Just returned home from the SoCal Regionals! We had 96 player, the biggest Regional yet for SW:D. I developed this deck after hours of Hondo mirrors - we expected the field to be 35-50% Hondo decks, so we built a Hondo deck designed to beat all the other Hondo decks. As it turns out, I only played 1 Hondo all day and still ended up pretty comfortably 6-2 (very few really close / tough matches, and lots of wins that were a breeze).

The key cards that separate this from the Poe/Hondo decks you've already seen from Portland:

  • Well Connected sucks, Double-Dealing is OP - I didn't like the 0-cost single use resource of Well Connected, just seemed like a pretty dead card. Against non-Hondo decks you don't really need it, but in Hondo matchups its crucial. I believe I won every single game where I resolved a Double Dealing in the first round. In my lone Hondo match, I mulliganed for it and ended up with both in play round 1. You can't really lose with this card out, and even vs. non-Hondo decks its a great way to cast multiple 3-cost cards in a turn on round 2-3.

  • Y-Wing + Droids is better than being fast - I tried to build the ambush/Planetary Uprising version but I noticed it just couldn't be fast enough. You still weren't faster than Poe/Aayla, Sabine, Palp, or any other exceptionally fast deck. Poe/Hondo is weak to vehicles, plus C-3P0 and Y-Wing are berzerk strong on their own and happen to synergize with Hondo. This replaces the questionable other Redeploys you might include like Holdout or E-11.

Don't let anyone razz you for playing the Droids. Chopper and BB-8 pulled their weight all day and were amazing round 1 plays. BB-8's worst side, the Disrupt, is basically a damage side and his Special is another focus/re-roll mechanic (like C-3P0 and Poe specials) that make the deck hyper consistent. One game I kept 4 and shipped back a Cunning, a spectator made a face at me like he couldn't believe it, but I drew Chopper as a replacement and had 3 supports down at the end of round 1. That's probably your ideal start (Double Dealing + 2 Droids)

Mulligan Strategy: Keep Double Dealing, any 1-cost Droids, and maybe Easy Pickings. I sent Poe's Blaster and Cunning back all day unless I already had a Double Dealing, but even then I would rather cast two or three 1-cost Supports or a single Y-Wing than an attached upgrade.

  • W - ePoe2 / eAayla + Profitable Connection
  • L - eAayla / Rey / Padawan
  • W - ePoe2 / ePadme + Espionage
  • W - ePoe2 / eAayla + Profitable Connection
  • L - eSabine / eEzra
  • W - eFinn2 / eHan2
  • W - eHondo / eYoda
  • W - eKylo2 / eTalzin

I wish I had more to comment on, but after my first 3 rounds (which where nailbiters to the last action), my final 5 rounds were cruising, all 4 wins were pretty comfortable and my loss was brutal. The only major misplay all day was forgetting to trigger Double Dealing, which happened a few times over the day, but against Sabine/Ezra absolutely crippled me. I could have had two Y-Wings on board in round 2, but instead sat on two resources, fell behind, and lost. Other than that, play slow and let them commit to their gameplan. I often cast Y-Wing after they claimed, catching them totally off-guard after durdling around with Droids for a dozen actions.

After playing it all day, the only cards I would take out are Hit and Run. They didn't really do much as Poe rarely gets super buff, and you are so slow you never claim anyhow. I would probably put in more mitigation that doesn't require a Yellow spot, like Flank.

Good luck with this deck! I truly feel like it's the best Poe-Hondo version around, something that a more experienced and veteran player (like one who doesn't forget to activate Double Dealing) could have Top 8'd with!

Top 8 was:

  • 2 eKylo2 / eMother
  • 2 eAayla / eRose / Ezra - Hero Vehicles
  • 1 ePoe2 / eHondo (I think I was the 2nd highest placing of the deck, but I'm not certain)
  • 1 eObi2 / eMaz
  • 1 5-Die Villain
  • 1 eYoda / eJarJar / Jedha Partisan - Hero Mill (I know)
